Location Scout Sheet

Location Scout Survey
(attach location photos)

Project Name: Narrative
Completed by: Brady Small
Scout Date & Time:  11/18/14, 1:30 PM

Location address: Education and Arts Building, IUSB

Day and time of shoot: Night of 11/25/14.

Location description (interior/ exterior): All indoor shots. The location is simple, feasible and appropriate for the narrative.

Describe the scene and action. How many people are on camera? The scenes and action will mostly just the main protagonist with various one on one encounters, as well as one mob shot and a few POV shots of that mob.

How much space is needed? Not very much space is needed. The smaller the better, that way we can give the feeling of a large crowd without having too many people.

Will the action be shot from one or multiple locations? The action will be shot on one location.

Is there off-screen space available? Yes, the bathroom shot will be tight but other than that, it should be more than enough off-screen space.

What are the light levels and sources of light? How does this impact your scene? We will have plenty of light from the lights inside the building.

Are you recording sound? Are there any issues to be aware of? Yes, we will be recording sound.  The only concern is the echo and reverberation in the bathroom during dialogue.

Is there any special equipment needed? The Boom Mic.

Are there any concerns that need to be addressed about shooting at this location? Making sure we can shoot in the bathroom.  That is my only main concern.

Narrative Script/5 Interesting Phrases

"But really, how are you?"

"Could I ask you for a straw?"

"Arby's is my favorite."

"When you stare off, what do you see?"

"I want to know what goes on between your ears."

NARRATIVE SCRIPT: "but really, how are you?"

It’s a Sunday morning at a “Mom & Pop” restaurant.  Its 10:30 AM.  There is a man, Collin, and a woman, Kiera, at the table.  The two seem to be in their early twenties.  They both show signs of fatigue/lack of sleep in their physical appearance.  But this was the first time they’ve seen each other for quite some time, so a little sleep deprivation wouldn’t stop them.  They were chatting away while enjoying their coffee.  It had been two years but the conversation carried like they’ve never been apart a day in their lives.

Kiera: “I heard you’re doing well in Boston.  Your career seems to be really taking off.”
Collin: “Yeah, its alright” <shrugging>
Kiera: “What’s that all about?  If you want to do something else, you shouldn’t torture yourself!”
Collin: “Well maybe things will change” <shrugging>

Collin had always wanted to be a performer in some sorts his whole life.  Being a musician or an actor, that was his dream.  But the uncertainty instilled in his youth to stay on the straight and narrow has always kept him from his dream.  He is like the elephant that was chained a tiny pole as baby and couldn’t get away, so that mindset is engrained into him. Even though now full grown, the thought of not being able to break free from the chain makes him not even make an attempt anymore.

Kiera: “One day you’ll be able to get out, and I can’t wait to see it.”

Kiera has always been the driving force to keep on pursuing.  In a way, she is his muse.  She has always done what she wanted when she wanted.  Collin always envied her lifestyle and mindset. That’s probably why he always loved her.

Collin: “I know, I know, I know.. but for the time being, I’m fine.”
Kiera: “But really, how are you?”

By the look on Collin’s face, it showed he hasn’t thought about it too much.  He looked down for fear that she knew.  She always could read him like a book.  In that instant, he decided his dreams were now or never.  Collin looked up at Kiera with a determined smile.

Collin: “Don’t worry, happiness is on the way.”

Music Video Analysis

I chose "Old Pine" by Ben Howard.  The entire video seems to be a nostalgic/happy look back at his past. He just walks down a dirt road facing the camera lip syncing the words as if he were telling the story/stories of him growing up or his fondness of the area.  All the shots had some sort of filter that gave a feeling of memories.  It was like a sepia toned video memoir.

Documentary

I draw lots of inspiration and knowledge from documentaries.  My idea would be to follow around a person with Cystic Fibrosis (an incurable, terminal disease), and show shots of their daily routine.  As well as get interviews of them talking about living with CF and their outlook on life because their life expectancy is in the early to mid-30's.  Its always interesting get the opinion of someone who knows their days are numbered.

Narrative

For the narrative,  I have an idea of a sort of post relationship story.  I want it to show the sort of changes of feelings from sadness/desperation to happiness/hope.  I would love to try to show a sort of montage of the past girl through the thoughts, to try to show whats going on in the person's head.  I don't have an image but I do have a short film I'd love to draw inspiration from to create it.  The short film is titled, "Apricot".

Music Video

First I like to preface with the fact that I do produce EDM(electronic dance music) and would love to use one of our songs for the video as well as give permission to other groups for other songs that we have created.  The song is "Imaginary Friends".  There is no words but the song emits a sort of "feel-good" vibe with a more serious, somber piano piece at the end.  My idea would be to create some sort of montage of a person with a bunch of friends partying, doing things, etc.  But at the end during the end piano piece, it would be cool to show a "real" image of him doing the same things but really on his own, to sort of show it was just his/her imagination.

Self-Portrait

Self-Introduction

Hi! I'm the 22 year old, Brady Small.  Answering the questions of "favorite" anything can be difficult for me.  It all depends on the mood that I'm in currently.  I tend to like anything that tries to go "against the grain" and "re-invent the wheel".  I enjoy "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" because I love Hunter S. Thompson's writing, as well as all books written by Chuck Palahniuk.  Another great film I enjoy is "American Psycho".  Don't be deceived, I don't enjoy scary/horror/gore films at all, but I do love some dark comedy.  As far as music is concerned, I truly love almost all genres except for Country.  My goals for the future are to find a stable job in Graphic Design while in pursuit of my dreams of producing EDM (electronic dance music).  I'm interested in making media in order to become as self-sufficient as possible in order to attain my dream in music.
